A Comprehensive Literature Guide for Twenty-One Balloons

I have long loved this adventurous fantasy story. It is a Newbery Medal Winner about Professor William Waterman Sherman who retires from teaching and plans to fly across the Pacific Ocean in a hot air balloon. Unexpectedly, he lands on Krakatoa, and discovers a world of unimaginable wealth, eccentric inhabitants, and incredible inventions. The publisher recommends this book for 9-11 year olds. I used to teach this in a 6th grade classroom and have been preparing it for my 8th grader’s summer reading.

This literature guide is divided into two portions.

  1. You can teach this to a group of students as a literature circle. Jobs are all created with easy to print instructions. There are also comprehension questions for each chapter if you want to add that in too.
  2. You can print a workbook style literature guide for an individual student (at home or in the classroom) to complete on their own.
