I have long loved this adventurous fantasy story. It is a Newbery Medal Winner about Professor William Waterman Sherman who retires from teaching and plans to fly across the Pacific Ocean in a hot air balloon. Unexpectedly, he lands on Krakatoa, and discovers a world of unimaginable wealth, eccentric inhabitants, and incredible inventions. The publisher recommends this book for 9-11 year olds. I used to teach this in a 6th grade classroom and have been preparing it for my 8th grader’s summer reading.
